Tue, 08 Jun 2010 - Long-period ground motion hazard maps for Japan

Long-period (about 2 to 10 s or longer) ground motions have become important due to the rapid increase in the number of large-scale structures. Since the source, path, and site effects on the long-period ground motions cannot be accurately evaluated and predicted by empirical methods, long-period ground motion simulations represent one of the most important means for these evaluation and prediction.

Tue, 08 Jun 2010 - Public education and outreach on natural hazards in Japan

The Earthquake Research Institute (ERI), at the University of Tokyo, provides various outreach activities related to seismology and volcanology. However, based on a recent survey, the public may have misunderstandings with regard to the activities and function of the institute. The outreach activities of disaster science need to manage these risks in a long-term point of view, and also respond to demand in the short-term perspective.
