EDUCATION AND OUTREACH OFFICE

This division of the Earth Observatory of Singapore conveys information about the scientific work of the institute to various audiences, including scientists, policymakers, NGOs, students, media and the public. It creates a range of materials for schools and communities to improve basic understanding of the processes and hazards of earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and climate change.

About us

The EOS Education and Outreach Office (EOS E&O) is the public-communication arm of the Earth Observatory of Singapore. We communicate EOS scientific research to the outside world, in addition to liaising with stakeholders on behalf of the EOS.

The EOS was set up to conduct core research into geologic and environmental processes, particularly as they affect the Southeast Asian region. This work is important for its own sake, though we believe it’s equally important that the broader community knows about and supports it.

The most important of our many target audiences is governments of the southeast Asian region, especially in Singapore and Indonesia. Since much of the EOS’ work broadly concerns natural hazards, our information has a public-safety focus. An informed government will be more prepared, and more capable of mitigating the effects of natural disasters. Thus EOS E&O facilitates general government briefings and consultation, plus sometimes specific warnings to governments. And in future, EOS research may help governments prevent certain disasters.

A very important part of our work is contributing to the Singapore schools curriculum and working closely with both teachers and students. EOS E&O also targets, and seeks support from, numerous other key parties including: collaborators, funding bodies, the media, and the general public.

We do all this to engage with and contribute to the community of which we are part.
