Chris NEWHALL is the group leader for volcano research at EOS. He studies processes leading to volcanic eruptions, and is working with a team at EOS to develop a modern database of worldwide volcanic unrest (WOVOdat). His previous projects include developing the volcanic explosivity index (VEI); using stratigraphic, petrologic and historical data to reconstruct eruptive volcanic behaviour; and researching processes of caldera unrest. Before joining EOS he worked nearly three decades in the US Geological Survey’s Volcano Hazards Program. He was co-leader of a crisis response team that forecast the major 1991 eruption of Pinatubo and has been active in similar volcano crisis assistance in other countries. Prof Newhall did his early academic work at the University of California-Davis and completed his doctorate at Dartmouth College. He was an affiliate professor of earth science at the University of Washington for 17 years and taught geology at Aquinas University in the Philippines while serving in the Peace Corp. His work has been widely recognized.
