Integrated Seismic and Tsunami Hazard Assessment of West Sumatra, Indonesia

The great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake and tsunami of December 2004 shows the importance of understanding the seismic and tsunami hazards of subduction zones.

Since then, the Sumatran megathrust has failed dramatically in March 2005 and September 2007, leaving the segment along the northern Mentawai islands relatively intact. This last segment is expected to rupture in the next
decades, producing an Mw 8.8 that would devastate cities and numerous towns along the shore of West Sumatra. The objective of this project, together with the accompanying project on tsunami simulation led by Zhenhua Huang, is to assess the seismic and tsunami hazard of West Sumatra, which will hopefully give insights and input to the authorities to devise action-plans to mitigate the
hazard.
