My research, which centers on the area of the Sumatra subduction zone in West Sumatra, Indonesia, focuses on observations of crustal deformation, and interpretation of these data to determine tectonic fault mechanisms. In particular, I combine geodetic measurements, such as from the Global Positioning System (GPS), GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) and tide gauges, using mathematical models (e.g. the Network Inversion Filter). The use of multiple geodetic datasets will enable me to better understand the mechanisms of energy release on the megathrust that can bring different areas of the fault closer to or further from failure, and also to separate signals from different geophysical processes. In addition to studying earthquakes along the Sunda megathrust, I also do numerical modeling on tsunamis trigged by these events. More accurate assessment of earthquake hazards along the Sumatra subduction zone together with tsunami modeling will allow me to draw regional hazard maps which will help to minimize loss of life and damage to property.
