Research Assistant (SEA2 and CTP)

The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) at Nanyang technological University in Singapore invites applications for the position of Research Assistant to support the SouthEast Asia SEA-level (SEA2) Program and the Climate Transformation Programme (CTP).These are interdisciplinary research programmes that integrate sea-level and climate datasets in Southeast Asia with sophisticated modelling capabilities to improve the accuracy of projections of sea-level rise and climate change.We are looking for someone with a passion for making Singapore and Southeast Asia a safer and more sustainable place in the face of climate change, sea-level rise, and their associate hazards, through supporting and communicating critical research on sea-level science.

The ideal candidate will have experience in both field work and laboratory work. The primary responsibilities include managing the laboratory, ensuring health and safety (for both the laboratory and its users), and organizing field work. Ideally, they will have a working knowledge of machines used for biogeochemical analyses, such as ICP, iSEAL, CHN analysers, and GCMS. They will also assist in research support and administrative duties (i.e., booking of cars, doing purchase orders and goods receipts, as well as other relevant duties). The incumbent will also work closely with other EOS Researchers on their projects, laboratory work, and field work.

The successful candidate will have strong planning and organizational skills, ability to provide guidance to students, and work both independently and in a team. They must possess a keen interest in Earth and/or Environmental sciences, sea-level rise, and climate change. Experience in driving and laboratory management is highly desirable. 

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in decision-making discussions and be involved in all fieldwork, lab work and workshops

  • Support researchers with sourcing and procuring equipment/inventory of supplies and samples, training safety and laboratory techniques to students

  • Organize field work, book vehicles, check equipment is returned cleaned and undamaged

  • Organize and maintain laboratory equipment

  • Run and maintain machines used for biogeochemical analyses, such as ICP, iSEAL, CHN analysers, and GCMS

  • Supervise undergraduate and graduate student in laboratory techniques

  • Ensure laboratory meets health and safety requirement

  • Being a member of the safety committee and chemical spill response team


Job Requirements: 

  • BSc degree in Earth Sciences, Environmental Studies, Geology, Geochemistry, or another related field

  • Strong planning and organisational skills, with experience both in laboratory and fieldwork

  • Working knowledge of machines used for biogeochemical analyses, such as ICP, iSEAL, CHN analysers, and GCMS

  • Demonstrates self-leadership and proactiveness

  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills

  • Able to work closely with other researchers and scientists (team player) to achieve desired objectives

  • Evidence of being able to work both independently and collaboratively, with a strong team spirit

  • Relevant licenses (i.e., IR1, IR2, First Aid) or certifications are desirable

  • Only candidates with existing permission to work in Singapore will be considered
