Why do buildings with base isolation resist earthquakes better than those without?

Base isolation is a building technique that decouples a building structure from the ground. Hence, seismic waves are absorbed by isolation units located at the base of the building, which protects it from most of the shaking. Together with full bracing technique, base isolation systems protect buildings very efficiently.
